The people of Sea, Sun & Salt (shortened to Sea, Sun & Salt) is a new city builder set in a small sunswept island.
In Sea, Sun & Salt, players build a city on a small island and define the tenets of their newly created culture. As the population increases, the water around the island recedes allowing the player to expand their town further. However if the player's subjects end up unhappy, the tide will rise back up and destroy the city.
The game becomes an exercise in balancing the different needs of their people. Does the city produce enough water from its wells? Should the player prioritize water intensive crops or crops that take more space? Are our wood stockpile ready for the coming winter?
Through experimentation and strategizing, the player discovers the intricacies and subtleties of running a small town and, in time, they will hopefully reach the furthest ends of the game's world.
Beyond the construction aspect, the game also allows the player to define the tenets of their people's culture and religion. Those choices are as important as architectural ones in determining the viability of this small but growing society. When should they break for worship? What are the core tenets of their belief system? If and when should they bathe? These questions and more the player will need to answer.
Finally, the player will come to discover that they were not the first to undertake this endeavour: As the level of the water lowers, ancient ruins of a sunken civilization will reveal themselves. If the player wishes to survive, they will need to learn from the failings of this long forgotten civilization.
The game seeks to be very accessible and avoids the overbearing complexity of similar titles. The controls are straightforward and the tutorial is woven seamlessly with the main game. But do not let this fool you, it will take hours and possibly a few attempts for players to reach the game's true ending.
All in all, its a good fit for casual city builders who liked titles like Mini Metro or Islander and for more dedicated fans of the genre that play games such as City Skylines or Caesar III.
